Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given approval for a project to introduce 1,500 electric buses across various cities in the province, with plans for a phased launch in remote regions.
The initiative aims to introduce the new transport system in six districts: Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Rahim Yar Khan, and Dera Ghazi Khan. The first phase of the project will see 380 electric buses introduced in Lahore and Gujranwala, with the service set to launch by June.
In addition, the government plans to begin ‘orange’ and ‘red’ bus services in Faisalabad. The red buses will operate between Samundri Road and Sargodha Road, while the orange buses will cover the route between Jaranwala and Jhang Road. A timeline for the construction of electric bus tracks in Faisalabad and Gujranwala was also discussed, along with plans to establish charging stations for the buses.
The CM has directed the planning of the Yellow Line electric bus track in Lahore, with a 15-day deadline. She also approved a proposal to establish a modern transport command and control tower in Lahore.
On the occasion, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of providing modern transport facilities to the people of all cities, not just Lahore. She expressed her commitment to making electric buses available in other cities as part of the development journey.
