On Tuesday, April 8, the Farmers Party announced plans for its exit from the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Why Farmers Party wants to quit Kenya Kwanza
In a letter addressed to the chairperson of the Kenya Kwanza Coalition secretariat, the party has issued a 30-day notice to exit Ruto's alliance.
“Therefore, Farmers Party hereby issues a thirty (30) day notice of intention to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, pursuant to Clause 8 (Termination) of the Coalition Agreement,” the letter reads in part.

Confusion as Raila Odinga hints at taking on William Ruto in 2027: "ODM itakuwa kwa uwanja"
Farmers Party accused Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party of consistent dishonesty, political infidelity, and outright disregard for both the Constitution of Kenya (2010) and the spirit of our Coalition Agreement.
"However, it is with deep regret that we note a consistent pattern of dishonesty, political infidelity and outright disregard for both the Constitution of Kenya (2010) and the spirit of our Coalition Agreement," the party said.
The party cited the recent deal between Ruto and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Raila Odinga.
According to the Farmers Party, the deal between Ruto and the former prime minister violates the trust upon which the Kenya Kwanza Alliance was founded.
The Kenya Kwanza Coalition's signing of a broad-based agreement with the ODM Party, without consulting constituent parties like ours, confirms the coalition's inherent political deception.
Commenting on the unfolding political drama, Patrick Munene, a political science lecturer at the University of Nairobi, said such defections are not only symbolic but also indicative of growing instability within the ruling coalition.
"What we are witnessing is a classic sign of a fractured alliance that was primarily held together by the promise of power and political convenience rather than ideological cohesion. If more parties follow suit, this could significantly weaken Ruto's support base ahead of 2027," Munene noted.
